They are not needed, They are not wanted. But the Lib Dems are determined to bring them back.

I wholeheartedly oppose any schemes along the lines of the Lib Dem proposals.
Orleans Primary and St Mary's CE Primary proposed School Street extensions
School Street zones are typically only supposed to be arround school entrances and applied only to schools where high pedestrian activity and high traffic conflict occur.
This is a much larger Scheme involving 15 streets directly and affecting the whole area from East Twickenham to the town centre. It is, in reality, a Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) scheme in all but name. The Lib Dems are trying to pull the wool over our eyes.
They are trying to use the cover of school safety to pursue their own ideological agenda, disregarding the huge costs and inconvenience to local residents. It will cause enormous displaced parking pressure for residents on nearby streets, as well as Inconvenience and difficulties receiving visitors, service providers, & taxis for those within this disproportionate scheme.
There is also the matter of displaced congestion for everyone else!
Some local residents, including many of my neighbours, thought the Council had scrapped the scheme after widespread rejection during the consultation. The Council wrote us all a letter whose tone seemed to indicate this.
However, they have kept the money to impliment the scheme in the budget and hidden in the last line of that letter they noted that "further proposals for change will be shared with residents in the summer".
Implimenting LTNs is a key policy in the Lib Dem manifesto. This one is not needed and will disproportionately disrupt the day to day lives of too many people to be allowed to go ahead.
